Hay Day Hair.

You’ll see what I’ve done there.

For those who follow my social media, (ig: @lethallookssalon) you’ll have seen my horse. His name is Wesley and he is an 11 year old Quarter Horse. I’m in love with him. Look at my pretty boy:

So of course I buy him all of the things, including hair care!! I gt it from our local farm supply store, go to the livestock section and it’s in the grooming department. Guess what else is?

Mane N’ Tail. The notorious shampoo/conditioner for long hair. Not just horse hair, human.

yall.

THIS IS THE FREAKING LIVESTOCK SECTION.

What in your right mind makes you think this is a good idea to be putting on your head!? Might as well grab some hide lotion next to it and rub it on your skin!

Now I know the stigma, I know people swear by it. I’m here to tell you right now, stop using that.

You guys. I didn’t even buy this for my HORSE. He got better stuff than that! Are you really going to let my horse have better hair than you?!

Here’s why I’m telling you to leave that crap on the aisle at the FARM store:

1) It’s full of waxes. These are silicones and sulfates that cost your hair and they end up preventing your hair from absorbing nutrients and hydration. This also gives you that “silky smooth” feel. It’s wax coating.

2) It gives keratin buildup. Keratin is what your hair, skin, and nails are made up. Some is good in moderation. There is a big issue with overusing keratin, which causes frizz and protein build up that can cause the hair to snap. This is what happens while using this!

3) The pH is not suitable for human hair and scalp.

4) It is not color safe and will strip your hair color.

5) The ingredients. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is one of its main ingredients which is in common terms, laundry detergent. Another ingredient is derived from coconut oil with is horrible for your hair.

wait.

Coconut oil is bad for your hair? I’m so glad you asked. Please see my article on coconut oil and why it’s bad.

6) Along with keratin build up it also has zinc which in moderation is great for oil control but tends to be over drying. Shall I go on?

Some people are like “but my scalp was so much better!” Okay well that goes into more questions like what you were using before, health concerns, etc…

There are SO many other products out there to help with you hair and scalp concerns, horse shampoo is not one of them.
